Generations of bingo players can’t be wrong, they love this game and now that we get bingo online, generations after us will also more than likely be playing the game. The history of bingo is a little clouded in, well…history. But the Americans like to lay claim to the actual name of the game and this was when Edwin Louw set out to market a game called Beano he had seen played in a local market.

So the history of bingo story goes; when he brought the game home, one of the people playing won, they were so excited they couldn’t contain themselves and stood and shouted BINGO, when they should have shouted “beano”. However, British historians don’t necessarily agree with this and believe that the history of bingo happened in the UK long before this incident took place.

Bingo History

Considering the tremendous popularity of Bingo, it is not surprising to find out what an interesting past the recreational activity actually has. With a very historical past, the highly enjoyable recreational pastime has seen all manner of interesting ups and downs in its history.

Italy 1530:

The game of Bingo originated in Italy in the year 1530. The game was significantly different from what is commonly referred to as Bingo in the modern day. More of a lottery than the game that we know in the modern day, it was extremely popular and very quickly became a common pastime for Italians who were more than happy to participate in the highly entertaining form of recreational activity. With so much attention being paid to the popular pastime, it is interesting to see how it came to be handed down through generations after generations. Today, Saturday is still reserved for the playing of Bingo for many Italians who are still enamored of the popular game to this day.

France 1778:

Bingo made it to the country of France in 1778, but was largely played only by the wealthy. Commoners generally did not play Bingo, as it was reserved for the entertainment of the wealthy. Despite this, Bingo became increasingly popular in all walks of life very quickly.

Germany 1880:

In Germany, the introduction of Bingo was mainly used as an educational tool. Schoolteachers utilized the popular game in order to teach all manner of educational subjects such as math, history and spelling. This focus brought even more popularity to the game of Bingo, creating a tremendous amount of notoriety among the population in general.

North America 1929:

When the game of Bingo first game to the Americas, it was not referred to as Bingo at all. Since the beans were used as place markers on the cards, it was referred to as Beano. When the player won five in a row, they would yell out the phrase Beano. Eventually, a salesman named Edwin S. Lowe began marketing and publicizing the name Bingo, changing the name for ever.

North America in 1930:

Working on his publicity campaign, Lowe hired a math professor from Columbia University named Carl Leffler in order to work on creating a new Bingo card. The combination on these cards would add up to 6000. Legend has it that this project sent the math professor over the edge and into insanity.

North America 1934:

Once churches began to utilize the game of Bingo in order to raise funds for their charities, the game took off tremendously in popularity all over the country. This type of activity is largely credited with increasing the popularity of the game that we know today.

United Kingdom 1968:

The gaming act is amended to include Bingo, indicating how extremely popular the recreational activity has begun to grow inside the United Kingdom itself.

United Kingdom 1986:

Officials in the United Kingdom begin a national game of Bingo, caving in to the extremely popular game and its ability to generate funds.

Worldwide 2007:

Over 3 million people enjoy playing in Bingo halls around the world, with increasing numbers of players joining in every day. The popularity of the game has increased tremendously, allowing churches to raise money, schools to teach students and even families to pass the time amongst themselves.

Today:

Today many millions of people play in almost every country in the world. With the advent of online bingo creating unpresedent access to online bingo anytime anywhere.

How to play bingo

Considering the fact that there is more than one type of Bingo, it can be somewhat difficult to simply point and click on the Internet when you decide to play a game of Bingo. First and foremost, you must understand all the different ways to enjoy the game of Bingo to begin with.

75 Ball Bingo

75 Ball Bingo is commonly played around North America. It is one of the most popular types of Bingo in the area and sees a lot of action from players all over the continent. Considering its popularity, this is probably the type of Bingo that you are already familiar with. The player uses cards that have 5 x 5 grids with numbers filled out inside the spaces. The cards have a very specific type of layout.

The traditional Bingo layout exists at the top, spelling the word Bingo across the tops of the columns. In each of the columns, there are random numbers that are chosen with certain criteria in mind. Any numbers under the B are always chosen between numbers one through 15. All the numbers under the letter I are always between the numbers 16 and 30. This continues across the board, although the letter N has a free space at the middle. Despite this, the rest of the numbers in the column are between the numbers 31 and 45. Under the letter G, the numbers are chosen from between 46 and 60 and of course, below the letter O are numbers chosen between 61 and 75. In this way, the numbers are pre-selected at random to a certain set of criteria in order to make sure the game comes out in a certain way.

Numbers are drawn out of a ball or other type of container one at a time and called off. Players will mark off the numbers on their cards as they come out, providing that they match what is on their player piece. In the case of 75 Ball Bingo, a grand total of 75 random balls can be chosen one after another until someone calls out Bingo. The Bingo pattern can be in a straight line, it can be diagonal, or it can take any number of different types of shapes. Each Bingo website will provide a specific set of criteria in order to keep everyone on the same page and make sure that there is an understanding between all the different players.

There are 6000 different possibilities for Bingo cards that an individual can play on.

90 Ball Bingo

Most other areas of the world besides North America participate in 90 Ball Bingo, which is significantly different from 75 Ball Bingo. The biggest difference is in the player’s tickets. The Bingo tickets contain three rows of nine columns. The tickets come in books generally and there are 10 cards in each book. With each card containing six tickets, cards are also referred to as strips, or strips of tickets.

The numbers one through 90 are randomly distributed all over the different columns. There is a certain order to the way that the numbers are distributed on the tickets. With a card or ticket strip, each number between one and 90 is located somewhere on the card. Each one of the rows contains five numbers with more blank spaces. When players call out Bingo, this refers to the fact that they have achieved a certain type of pattern on the card itself. With all manner of different names, the first pattern is referred to as one line, meaning that they have crossed off enough squares to produce one horizontal line. Following this is two lines, meaning two horizontal lines have been crossed off in order to create the pattern and of course, there is the full House which is accomplished by crossing off all the numbers on the players taking.

Playing Bingo Online

While many websites offer a choice between 90 Ball Bingo and 75 Ball Bingo there are all manner of websites in the world and some of them have developed a game called 80 Ball Bingo. It is important to be sure what type of Bingo that you are getting involved in before you start playing. You will definitely want to understand the rules before beginning. Most of these types of websites will have a caller that is audible as well as a spot on the screen where you can see the numbers flash as they are called. In this way, it is difficult to miss the listing of each number as it is called. Most of these websites will automatically mark the Bingo cards for you, making it far simpler for you to play with several different cards at the same time. These websites also will give you a chance to refuse the cards that you’re given and choose new ones before play begins.
